My HOA Rights exists to answer one question as clearly as possible: what can your homeowners association actually do, and what are your options when you disagree with it?
Why This Site Exists
More than 70 million people in the U.S. live under an HOA, and most of them only start researching how these associations actually work after they receive a violation letter, a fine, or a special assessment notice. The existing information online tends to fall into two camps: generic legal-directory articles that don’t go deep enough, or property-management blogs written from the HOA’s point of view. My HOA Rights is written from the homeowner’s side, using official sources — state statutes, HUD, the FTC, and community association law — rather than other blogs.
Who Writes This
Content is researched and written by Axel R., with a focus on consumer rights and community association law. We are not attorneys, and nothing here is legal advice — see our Disclaimer for details. Where an article touches on state-specific statutes, we cite the specific code and link to the official source.
Our Editorial Process
Every article starts from the same set of sources: the specific state statute or condominium/HOA act where one applies, federal guidance from HUD and the FTC, and general community-association background from the Community Associations Institute (CAI). We do not cite competing advice blogs or legal-directory sites as sources. Because HOA law varies significantly by state and even by governing document, we deliberately avoid stating a specific dollar figure, deadline, or statute number as if it applied everywhere — instead we flag where the rule is state-dependent and point you to where to verify it for your own community. Articles are periodically reviewed and updated as rules or sources change; each article lists its last-updated date near the end.
Independence
My HOA Rights is not affiliated with any HOA, property management company, or law firm. The site is supported by display advertising, not by anyone whose interests might conflict with giving homeowners a straight answer.
